FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS NEW LAW FOR VOTERS

The restricition where the state can fine groups that submit 100 or more voter registration forms lacking a complete name, address, date of birth, declaration of eligibility and signature won’t take effect Oct. 1 after a federal judge blocked the new law in an injunction yesterday. The ruling means the law won’t go into effect until the court decides lawsuits filed against the Secretary of State, the state Elections Coordinator and members of the State Elections Commission.


TEEN HAD POT IN SYSTEM/COP WAS SPEEDING BEFORE HIS DEATH

The teenager charged in the July 4 death of a Nashville police officer had marijuana in her system, three nanograms to be exac, taccording to a blood test ordered by police soon after the crash.The officer, John  Anderson was going 71 mph at the time of the crash, more than 25 mph faster than Nashville police policy allows, violating police policy. Jayona Brown, who was 17 during the crash, was charged with vehicular homicide in the case. An investigator of the crash said, Had Anderson been going 45 mph, the maximum allowed over limit, the crash would not have happened. Had Brown stopped at the flashing red light,  the crash would not have happened.


JOHN COOPER DEFEATS DAVID BRILEY FOR MAYOR

John Cooper, who campaigned on a platform of getting the city’s fiscal house in order, was elected the ninth mayor of Nashville yesterday in a historic election that signaled the strong desire among voters for a new direction for Music City. Cooper, an at-large Metro Council member, convincingly defeated Mayor David Briley 69% to 30%, marking the first time since the formation of Metro government that an incumbent mayor has lost a reelection bid. Unofficial election results show Zulfat Suara has won a seat for Nashville Metro Council at large and is the first Muslim elected to the Metro Nashville


MAN FOUND DEAD INSIDE BURNING RV 

A man was found dead inside an RV in Antioch early Friday. Metro Police responded to an the report of an RV engulfed in flames on Cummings Court at about 1:30 a.m. Once firefighters extinguished the fire, they found the burned body inside the RV. Police and fire investigators are on the scene and working to identify the deceased victim. The Nashville Fire Department is leading the investigation.


DRUG BUST IN NORTH NASHVILLE

A search warrant executed by Metro narcotics detectives led to a drug bust at a North Nashville home Thursday, according to officials. Narcotics detectives said they executed the warrant in the 2300 block of 23rd Avenue North. Police said parolees Terrence Parrish, 30, Lavasier Newman, 31, and probationer Jeverish Williams, 31, were all arrested on multiple felony counts.
