Trends to Keep or Leave

Written By: Eboné Merrimon

Throughout last year, our news feed was filled with trends that focused on unique dress wear and makeup design. We must admit some mistakes were made. Designers and makeup artists took their skills to create some distinctive styles that could be left in 2017 or kept for 2018. Let’s take a look at some beauty and fashion techniques that have us saying (in our best RuPaul voice) “Shante, you stay or sashay away.”

The proper term for this wear is “RompHim” and according to hollywoodreporter.com it originates from the mind of four Chicago based designers that wanted to add an option to the mundane dress wear for men. The trend took off earlier last year as a Kickstarter with a goal of $10,000 but raised almost $150,000 making it a setting statement in men’s fashion. Though it was received well many believe that it just depends on the body type that’s rocking the look. In my opinion, no matter the type, no matter the pattern, it has to go.

Call me basic or even traditional, but I can’t with squiggle eyebrows. This trend crept into our news feed in the spring of 2017 and many makeup artists took the look and actually put it apart of their everyday routine. They look like a sound wave and the process for creating this guise involves you shaping your brow in a squiggly line then covering the outline with concealer. In my opinion, it takes more effort to achieve this creation than it does for a basic arch and highlight. This warped trend should definitely stay where it came from and let’s just pretend like it never happened.

It just works! This look is for the man that wants to grow out their hair just enough to trim but still want the shaped edges. This classy look can be fitting to any season as it doesn’t take much maintenance. As an admirer of this hairstyle trend I can say that men with the right shape up always catch some attention. I have to say this look is a definite must stay for this new year.

Glitter lipstick has always been around in the sense of taking glitter gloss and using it as a topcoat, but it changed in wear in 2017. Glitter lipstick is credited to Pat McGrath as she changed the style with a 24 hour wear that never smudges nor dries out. The look is worn all over even by Keyshia Ka’oir who is seen wearing this trend on a daily basis. This is a perfect addition to any outfit as a statement piece and is a definite must stay.

What looks would you leave behind or keep for 2018?
