*There’s a time-worn axiom that speaks about there being two sides to every story. With regard to Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ ending their 146 year run, and their perceived treatment of animals, it’s absolutely true.
The circus has struggled to fill seats for decades, with heightened attention being paid to the treatment of animals and an increased difficulty holding on to the attention span of children armed with iPhones. Last year, Ringling Bros bowed to concerns about the treatment of elephants and removed them from the show, and attendance plummeted.
Late last week, Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey announced they were ending the show this May. Animal rights activists, including PETA and ASPCA, claimed victory and cheered, as did many in Hollywood, including Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo, Moby, Sex and the City star Kristin Davis, comedian Ricky Gervais, Family Guy creator Seth McFarland, and Hidden Figures star Taraji P. Henson…
“As a child I never really liked going to the circus because the animals ALWAYS looked so sad and miserable!!!!” Henson said.
