The state medical examiner’s office in Mississippi has concluded that the death of a college student found hanging from a tree earlier this week was a suicide.
21-year-old Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a student at Delta State University, was discovered early in the morning on campus behind the pickleball courts. The autopsy confirmed the cause of death as hanging, and the manner of death as suicide. Toxicology results are still pending and may take several weeks to complete.
The incident occurred on the same day the university was set to celebrate its centennial, prompting the cancellation of classes and events. Reed’s death has sparked widespread grief and outrage, especially on social media and from civil rights leaders, where many questioned the circumstances and called for transparency.
