Fantasia: "The Game Can Take Over Your Mind"

March 5, 2013

Fantasia tells JET magazine that she didn't have many expectations when she won American Idol at age 19.  "I just wanted to enjoy the ride ahead and make the best of it," says the singer, whose journey has taken some rough turns in the past few years.

Three years ago, Fantasia landed in the hospital after overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid.  She faced reported money troubles, and was caught in scandal when it was revealed that she was dating a married man, whose wife later took her to court.  The man, Antwaun Cook, is the father of Fantasia's one-year-old son.

"The game can take over your mind," Fantasia tells JET

She says performing helped her get her life back on track.  "You could say that the stage saved me because when I'm in front of people I carry my pain and soul," Fantasia explains.  "That is my salvation.  I know the entire world does not love me, but I can give everyone some good music."

The mother of two says that she's learned to stop trying to please people.  "Now I put my own interests first," she says.  That means handling her finances, personal relationships and career differently.  She shares her growth on her upcoming album Side Effects of You, officially due out April 23.  Target's online store, however, advertises an exclusive edition of the Fantasia set with an April 16 release date.
